The June 2023 Adventure Program is in the books what an adventure it was! They frolicked with exciting creatures at the Bailiwick Animal Park in Catskill, immersed themselves in Post-Impressionistic art at the Van Gogh Exhibit in Schenectady, had a “hole” lot of fun at Howe’s Caverns, launched into a luncheon cruise in Lake George,  pedaled through the scenic Adirondacks, and much more. The spotty weather added to the adventure and made for some great stories when they got home! The Adventure Program is offered to applicants who are 11 years old or older, live at home, and meet OPWDD’s [...]

What better place to celebrate the birthday of our nation than a tour of the state Capital grounds? The gentlemen who reside in one of our Albany residences recently took a trip to downtown Albany with one of their staff members. Norman, Danny, and Robert enjoyed the day by picking up some lunch at an area restaurant,  touring around the Plaza, and posing for this great photograph. These great friends love the independence of getting into the community and look forward to these exciting trips! Our residential sites offer a home environment, receiving support from as little as two hours a [...]

The group was taken on a narrated 30-minute tram tour to learn about the collection and then walked around the center experiencing the beauty of the sculpture garden.

The Rockland County Day County Opportunity Program began their island adventure with a drive to the Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan where they then boarded the Staten Island Ferry. The Staten Island Ferry is a fare-free shuttle that transports passengers the 5.2 miles across the New York Harbor to Staten Island, a journey that took about 25 minutes. For many, this mini-island adventure marked their first experience on a Ferry. One look at the smiles will tell you how much they loved it! They enjoyed looking out at the water, watching the waves crash against the side of the boat, and of [...]

Teams from our Saratoga and Schenectady Day Community Opportunities Programs (DCOP) headed to the field for a Valley Cats Game this week, and it was quite a hit! They settled into the front row of third base side, making themselves right at home rooting for the home team and enjoying great park food and refreshments. And, since this is DCOP, you know they were hobnobbing with the ValleyCats’ mascot Southpaw and dancing to all the tunes! The most exciting part of the day occurred during the game when ValleyCats second baseman, Luis Santana handed a baseball to our participant, Kim. She [...]

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” – Dr. Seuss.  It’s May and we can see the grass growing, flowers blooming, and trees filling out their leaves. Unfortunately,  we can also see the trash that litters our parks and roadways and the briars that have started to crowd out the native plants. To combat this, Parks and Trails of New York joined forces with the Department of Environmental Conservation and other agencies for #ILoveMyParkDay."  Some of our supported individuals joined the more than 5,000 volunteers to beautify and celebrate New [...]

A short time ago, in a galaxy not too far from here, staff and individuals from Living Resources hopped aboard a transport ship to Endor and back with the assistance of @Capcomfcu who provided thirty tickets to the #LivingResoucesFamily to see David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony performing John Williams' iconic music from Star Wars. When they entered the Palace Theater, they were greeted by members of both the Alliance and the Resistance, including the timeless Princess Leia, Force Strong Rey, and some not-so-menacing Storm Troopers (one was a little short to be a Storm Trooper and could have been [...]

House of Bricks

American Filmmaker Christopher Miller once said, “With a bucket of Lego, you can tell any story. You can build an airplane or a dragon or a pirate ship - it's whatever you can imagine.” His appreciation of the iconic plastic blocks runs so deep that he co-wrote and co-directed the 2014 computer-animated adventure comedy film The Lego Movie. And he’s not alone in his love of LEGO® blocks. Members of the College Experience Alumni Activities Club joined thousands of others who explored the BrickUniverse Lego Fan Expo as it stopped at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany in its travels across [...]
