We are excited to announce our second Cycling to Creativity challenge! As the father of one of our supported individuals and an avid bicyclist, Ed Brennan issued this challenge in support of the many programs at Living Resources. Ed has a two-year goal to ride his bicycle from Albany, New York to Albany, Oregon, beginning in late May 2023. This year's leg will be taking him through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota and ending in Fargo, North Dakota - a distance of nearly 2,000 miles. If you ask most college students about their scholastic journey, they will tell you about their accomplishments, struggles, high points, and disappointments, but for most of them, graduating was always a foregone conclusion. Fifteen participants and three staff in our Warren County Day Community Opportunity Program (DCOP) took the two-hour journey into Massachusetts to visit the Berkshire Museum this month. The county’s manager, Hollie Willsey said the trip was well worth it. Nick Williams, a College Experience graduate, and current service recipient of Living Resources had a small role in a movie that won top honors at the NYS Writers Institute’s Albany Film Festival at SUNY Albany on Saturday, April 1. In his big screen debut, Nick, who has cerebral palsy, acted in a family dinner scene filmed in Ballston Spa, NY. The movie “Laurina,” which won the Best Dramatic Short and Overall Short Film at the festival, takes place in 1921. Four participants of our art program had their artwork shown in the 2023 Inspiring Women Project Art Exhibit sponsored by The YWCA of NorthEastern NY and C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios. This inclusive event showcased local artists through an exhibit designed to empower and celebrate the accomplishments of all women and non-binary persons. The artworks of Crystal, Christina, Katie, and Debbie were featured alongside those of YWCA residents, clients, staff, and other talented community members for a truly inclusive exhibit. This past week, our program staff and participants have been advocating for an 8.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) and a wage enhancement for Direct Support Professionals - and taking some whisks to get their point across. Governor Hochul’s Fiscal Year 2024 Executive Budget proposal includes a 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) to the Medicaid reimbursement rates for non-profit organizations that operate under the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).
