The war room of the New York State Capitol was buzzing with excitement on November 18. Advocates from across the state gathered for the first rally of the season to call on Governor Hochul to make important investments in the I/DD community. There were speakers from across the community who came to share their stories. Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara opened up the rally and got the energy flowing in the room with his speech. Senator Patricia Fahy was also in attendance, reaffirming her commitment to disability services. Elizabeth Martin, CEO of Living Resources, spoke about how these investments impact care providers. We also heard from two self-advocates about how important Direct Support Professionals are to their lives, and one DSP shared how investments could make an impact for DSP across New York State. Finally, a mother and 50-year advocate shared her story of perseverance and love. The energy was high in the room, and the chants rang out, “Invest in ME, Invest in US,” a cry heard throughout the Capitol. This year, advocates are asking for the following

  • 2.7% targeted inflationary increase
  • Infrastructure and care system investment
  • Careforce affordability initiatives

Living Resources is firmly committed to advocating for advancements and investments in the I/DD community. We hope you will stand with us. Contact your legislators today and tell them that care can’t wait!
