Agency Brokerage Services – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an Agency Broker and an Independent Broker?

An Independent Broker is self-employed, while an Agency Broker is an employee of Living Resources / Family and Child Service. The main benefit of an Agency Broker is the “team” approach—if your broker is on vacation or out sick, there is an entire agency infrastructure to support you, ensuring your plan and billing never skip a beat.

Do I have to use Family and Child Service for both my Fiscal Intermediary and Brokerage?

Not at all. Self-Direction is built on choice. You can use us for just FI, just Brokerage, or both. However, many families find that having both services under one roof at Family and Child Services makes communication much faster and reduces the chance of paperwork getting lost between different organizations.

Is there an extra cost for Agency Brokerage services?

Brokerage services are funded directly through your Self-Direction budget (under the “Brokerage” line item). It is not an out-of-pocket expense for the individual or family. Our team can help you look at your current budget to see how these services fit.

Can I switch to your Agency Brokerage is I already have a broker?

Yes. Switching is a standard process, but it does require a bit of paperwork and a “transfer date” to ensure a clean handoff of your records. We handle the heavy lifting of the transition so there is no gap in your services.

How often will I meet with my broker?

At a minimum, your broker will meet with you for your circle of support meetings. However, our brokers are available throughout the year to help you update your budget, find new staff, or navigate changes in OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) regulations.

Will I still have control over my own budget?

Absolutely. The “Self” in Self-Direction remains the priority. The Broker is there to provide the expertise and “administrative muscle” to make your vision happen, but you (and your family/circle of support) always make the final decisions on how your funds are spent.

How do I get started if I’m new to Self-Direction?

Coordinate with your care manager to attend the OPWDD Self-Direction information session. Your Care Manager can assist with choosing a Fiscal Intermediary and Broker to get the process started. Call 518-218-0000 x4385 for more information.

Can a Broker help with recruitment of staff?

Yes! We will work within your budget to find the staff you want and need for your services to the best of our ability.
