It was truly a joy to reconnect with Joe H., a bright light in our College Experience Program (CEP) since 2021. Joe’s enthusiasm for the program is infectious, and he truly cherishes his classes, finding them to be the most enriching part of his CEP journey. Beyond his studies, Joe dedicates three days a week to his work at Prime at the Plaza in Albany. We had the wonderful opportunity to chat with him during his workday, delving into his life, his work, and the things that ignite his spirit.
Joe has a deep passion for athletics. He was a dedicated member of his high school wrestling team and loved playing baseball. More recently, he’s found immense joy on the Mazzone Hospitality softball team, embracing the camaraderie and building wonderful relationships with his colleagues outside of work. In fact, Joe shared how much he values his coworkers, describing them as genuinely kind and supportive.
Michaela, the Executive Chef and General Manager for Prime at the Plaza, shared something truly heartwarming about Joe. She mentioned that while a kitchen environment can sometimes be stressful, Joe is a true beacon of positivity. He has a remarkable ability to uplift his coworkers and maintain morale, making the workplace a brighter place for everyone. Joe’s contributions are invaluable; he meticulously stocks the drink cooler, prepares food like chicken and eggs, and expertly cuts cucumbers. He even takes on grilling and deep-frying for customers! His love for his job shines through, and it was incredibly moving to hear Michaela express her genuine hope that he’ll never leave.
We are profoundly grateful to Mazzone Hospitality and Prime at the Plaza for cultivating such an inclusive workplace where individuals with disabilities can thrive. Their commitment has been instrumental in helping Joe gain incredible independence. We’re absolutely thrilled to share that Joe will soon be embarking on a new chapter, moving into his very own apartment with a roommate. We eagerly await to witness all the amazing things that are yet to come for him!
