October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive hiring practices. This year, we’re spotlighting a fantastic partnership between Living Resources and Dave & Buster’s, and the journey of one remarkable individual, Phillip.
A New Chapter
Phillip is no stranger to the workforce. A graduate of Colonie High School, he has worked for many years in the restaurant and food service industry. For a decade, he has been a valued food service worker at Siena College, where he manages steam tables, sanitizes workstations, and keeps food items stocked for students. However, when Siena classes aren’t in session, Phillip has a lot of down time. To keep himself busy, he thought it would be a great idea to get a summer job.
The partnership between Living Resources and Dave & Buster’s isn’t new, but it was re-established this year. When Phillip needed a summer job, the career counselor reached out to Dave & Buster’s management. They were hiring and encouraged Phillip to apply online, which he did with support from his career counselor.
A Recipe for Success
Since starting at Dave & Buster’s, Phillip has made significant strides, particularly in his prep tasks. He has mastered the use of a food scale and a food label machine—a skill he was initially hesitant to learn. Now, he uses both independently, needing no assistance when labeling food for the walk-in fridge. He continues to work on booking his own bus trips to and from work, building his

independence step by step.
Just two months into his new job, Phillip’s hard work and positive attitude were recognized with the “Better Together” Award for July. It’s a testament to his dedication and a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right opportunity and support.
The Bigger Picture
This partnership is a shining example of how inclusive employment benefits everyone. For Living Resources, Phillip’s success shows that the workforce is for anyone who wants it. The support provided by his career counselor and job coach helps him, and others, become as independent as any other employee.
For the wider community, this partnership demonstrates that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) can achieve their career goals. Living Resources serves as a role model for setting and reaching career expectations. By providing tools like technology, reminder sheets, and on-site support, they turn every job seeker into a success story.
As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let’s remember that we all have unique gifts and strengths. Everyone learns and works in their own way. This month is a time to celebrate the talents and interests that people with disabilities bring to the workplace and to welcome their contributions with open arms.
