Here at Living Resources, our mission is to enable individuals with disabilities to live their lives with dignity, independence, and happiness. So, when we see an individual we support doing just that, we love to share their story.
Meet Michael, a Long Island native who came to the Albany area for the first time in 2018 as a part of Living Resources’ College Experience Program. During the Program, Michael learned valuable life skills and made lasting friendships. In fact, he currently lives with two other College Experience alumni in their very own apartment. They’ve been living together in the apartment for nearly three years now, and just signed their lease for another year! Michael says they get along great, and when not hanging out with friends or working, the three roommates enjoy spending time together in the apartment.
After graduating from The College Experience Program, Michael explored a few different career paths, and found he liked child care the best. For the last year, he has been working at an afterschool program at an elementary school. Recently, he was asked to pick up before-care shifts at a different school because he was doing such a great job in the after school program! He loves his job and finds working with children incredibly rewarding. He says the students who were there last year remembered him this year, and he enjoyed seeing familiar faces.
When not at work or spending time with friends, Michael is focusing on his physical health. About a year ago, Michael embarked on a fitness journey with the goal of losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle. He goes to the gym three days a week and works with a personal trainer to help him achieve his goals. When we caught up with him, he was on his way to a nutrition class here at Living Resources, where he learns how to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious meals.
We were so happy we got a chance to catch up with Michael and see all the amazing things he is accomplishing. Keep up the great work!
