This month was very special for the Ulster County Day Community Opportunities Program (DCOP). We had the chance to proudly celebrate and say thank you to the amazing men and women who have served in our country’s military. It was a day full of thanks, learning, and real connections that left everyone feeling inspired.
Our day started with a truly heartfelt activity: making personalized thank-you cards for local veterans. Our DCOP team put all their care and appreciation into every card. We decorated them with patriotic colors and wrote messages showing deep respect and thanks. Later, these cards were given out at a local Veterans ceremony. It was a huge honor to meet some of the brave people who dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms. Handing out those cards and seeing the smiles and recognition on the veterans’ faces was the absolute best part of the day. It showed us how much a simple, handmade card can really mean.
The celebration continued with a very important trip: a visit to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York. This museum is a powerful
and humbling tribute to the people who received the Purple Heart. This medal is America’s oldest military award. It specifically
honors service members who were wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. Walking through the exhibits helped us understand the huge personal sacrifices these heroes made. We learned about their different backgrounds, the difficult situations they faced, and their strong commitment to our nation. The experience was both educational and emotional. It was a crucial reminder of the high cost of freedom and the extraordinary courage shown by those who wear the uniform.
The individuals in Ulster DCOP were very happy and excited to take this time to formally and proudly honor these veterans. The entire experience—from making the cards to the reflective museum visit—strengthened our promise to keep supporting and celebrating our veterans. To all the men and women who have served our Country: Thank you. Your courage, your sacrifice, and your dedication inspire us every day.
