Living Resources Deaf Services Department has the capacity of providing professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services for all Deaf, hearing-impaired and hearing parties in a plethora of settings, including, but not limited to, educational, medical, legal, business, theatre and religious within the Capital Region and beyond. This agency accommodates an array of interpreting services, such as ASL/ English Interpretation, Transliteration, Oral Transliteration, and Low Vision/ Tactile Interpretation, to satisfy the needs of any business or facility seeking to preserve compliance with Title III of the American with Disabilities Act found at www.ada.gov.

These services allow for effective communication through the use of qualified ASL interpreters; the majority of whom hold national certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and /or the National Association for the Deaf, which assures all parties of professional, ethical, and business practices through the adherence to the Code of Professional Conduct, found on the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf’s website.

Organizations may contact the Deaf Services Coordinator for the procurement of services, as well as, general and/ or customized presentations on Deaf – related topics, Technology and Assistive Devices used by the Deaf and American Sign Language instructions.

Role of American Sign Language Interpreters

Professional interpreters have been trained to effectively process and convey information between two different languages; therefore, a practitioner in this field is a skilled facilitator of communication between Deaf and non-Deaf persons and is able to exceed a signed conversation.

Interpreters are not active participants of the dialog, but instead allow for effective communication among the parties involved, with attention to the adjustment of cultural implications and nuances.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations, postponements, or schedule changes must be received at least two full business days in advance of the original date of the assignment(s) to avoid a total charges for the complete duration requested. [Monday through Friday, 48 hours notice]

Proper Use of Sign Language Interpreters


  • A brief conference with the interpreter and Deaf individual(s) prior to the start of the assignment regarding seating and lighting is beneficial.
  • Speak directly to the Deaf person(s) at a natural pace.
  • Please note that a momentary delay will occur as the interpreter works from spoken English to American Sign Language and vice-versa.
  • Contingent on the nature of the assignment, the interpreter may require a break or a team interpreter.
